The Lab school was started by famed educational philosopher John Dewey. It has gone through many different revisions and has steadily evolved with the times. Today the Lab School teaches over 1700 students grades Pre K through 12. The school also has a little known academy for the “gifted”. This academy specializes in teaching students with specialized powers how to control their powers and gain experience in using them.
Currently there are 36 students in the gifted program grades 8-12. The gifted students are main streamed with the regular students for their basic classes. They receive special training with their powers in-between classes and after school. During the Second Great Fire it was the work of the gifted students who saved Hyde Park from the fate that the surrounding neighborhoods.
